The municipality of Valdisotto, located in northern Italy, decided to finance a study on the municipal building stock to identify the most suitable buildings for solar thermal installations.

The local hotel, which was going to be refurbished and later sold to private investors, was clearly a good option for a solar thermal system: high and quite constant energy demand for domestic hot water, together with the possibility of installing a fitness centre in the hotel are a positive prerequisite for solar assisted heating.

Two scenarios have been proposed: a 25 kWth solar plant would lead to 40 % fuel savings and 6.2 tons CO2 reduction (in case the fitness centre will not be installed). Otherwise, a 32 kWth system may reach 45 % fuel savings and 8.7 tons CO2 reduction.
