Project Summary

Description

The tenants initiated the installation of the CSTS and the motivator was the board of the association. The CSTS consist of flat plate collector in 2-part orientation, one field towards the east and one m2 field towards the west. In the basement of the building is located the heating central consisting of heat exchangers and storage tank.
The solar thermal system was made as a demonstration project and consequently the price of the plant reflects this issue. It is difficult to distinguish and break down the costs.
The solar loop pipes are installed inside the cavity wall insulation of a new exterior wall made on the gable, which at the same time have reduced the heat loss from the building. The building is at the same time refurbished with a new top roof layer of the type “Decra”. The insulation in the attic was increased to 300 mm. New thermal windows are installed everywhere.
The CSTS is only for hot tap water. The boiler station in the basement has been renovated at the same time.
There are great possibilities for enlargement of the solar collector area for space heating but for the moment the return temperature from the radiator system is considered to be too high.

Summary

In year 2000 a 336 m2 solar domestic hot water system was built in Sundparken, Elsinore, Denmark.

The solar heating system is a low flow system with a 10,000 ltr. hot water tank. Due to the orientation of the buildings the CSTS is made as two separate plants with common storage. Half of the solar collectors (168 m2) are facing east, the other half of the solar collectors (168 m2) are facing west.

The collector tilt is 15° from horizontal for all collectors. Both the east-facing and the west-facing collectors have their own solar collector loop, circulation pump, external heat exchanger and control system.

The external heat exchangers are used to transfer the heat from the solar collector fluid to the domestic water. The domestic water is pumped from the bottom of the hot water tank to the heat exchangers and back to the hot water tank through stratification inlet pipes. The return flow from the DHW circulation pipe also enters the tank through stratification inlet pipes. The tank design ensures an excellent thermal stratification in the tank.

District Heating maintains the necessary set point temperature of the hot water via two other heat exchangers. The system also contains two 3 m3 tanks as DHW buffer. Further two heat exchangers are installed between the District heating system and the space heating system.
