Project Summary

Description

New residential building (39 dwellings) with solar thermal collectors on a flat roof.

The main reason to install the CSTS is the Sant Cugat del Vallès Solar Ordinance. By this municipality ordinance one is obliged to install solar thermal systems in new buildings for hot water preparation with a minimum solar fraction of 60 %.

This building was the first VERTIX building where a solar thermal system was installed for hot tap water preparation. The solar storages are distributed de-centrally and are connected in series to a modulated combination boiler (for space heating and hot water preparation).

VERTIX was satisfied with the realized solution and will apply more systems of this kind in the future.

"The CSTS installation of Sant Cugat del Vallès was the first one done by VERTIX. However the implementation of the system was obliged by the municipality Solar Ordinance. It was also taken as a challenge by the project developer to comply with this obligation. The good results of the installation and the lack of major problems gave confidence to VERTIX to invest in solar thermal systems in future buildings."

Financing and investment

Introduction

VERTIX did not sent in any application for subsidies, although at the time the CSTS was built they were available. They were informed by the installers about this possibility, but VERTIX was not interested.
The costs of the CSTS were incorporated to the final cost of the dwellings. This means the tenants paid for the system, of course with lower operational costs for hot water preparation.

Development & experiences

Qualitative aspects of the CSTS

The technical staff of VERTIX always explores the possibility to go beyond the legal framework, however the management staff had decided to stick to the minimum legal requirements due to additional investment costs.


Summary of experiences / Notices to the project performance

The CSTS is running well.
At the beginning there were some complaints because the noise of one pump. This pump was changed and no more problems were reported.
In the beginning there were also some problems with the collector fluid reported. There were some small leaks in the circuit causes pressure drops in the circuit. Leaks were detected and repaired and the circuit was filled again.

Yes, it was reported that one of the tenants disconnected 2 out of the 3 valves of the system in order to gain more hot water than the rest of the tenants.

Yes, explain the tenants how to use the system in a proper way. Restrict the access to the system in order to diminish possible manipulation of the installation.
